Did you know that the origin of one of Harlingen’s oldest associations is directly connected to Hotel Zeezicht? The Harlinger Gentlemen’s Society Zeeburg will soon celebrate its 200th anniversary – and it all began right here, where our hotel now stands.
In 1828, the first location of Zeeburg opened in the building that would later become Hotel Zeezicht. At the time, dignitaries, seafarers, and merchants gathered here to talk, play cards, and share the latest news – exactly where our guests now enjoy breakfast with a view of the harbour.
A Rich History
Over the years, the society moved to various locations in the city, but its roots lie here on the Zuiderhaven. To this day, Zeeburg remains committed to connection, tradition, and community – with over 90 members who are actively involved in the city and its history.
With its 200th anniversary approaching in 2028, the society is working on both renewal and reflection. A book about its history is in the making, and plans are being made to involve future generations and carry on its legacy.
Hotel Zeezicht as the ‘Starting Point’
For us at Hotel Zeezicht, it is special to play such a historic role in Harlingen. Not only because our building is a monument, but because it brings together so many tangible stories. Guests who stay here are spending the night at a place where people have gathered for generations – from 19th-century society members to today’s tourists and island travellers.
Would you like to experience a bit of the past? Take a seat on our terrace, look out over the harbour, and imagine what it was like here nearly 200 years ago… Perhaps with a good glass of wine – just like back then.
